The most important driving force of the global economy is the worldwide consumption and production. It was estimated that our global population could grow around 8.5 billion in 2030 and 9.7 billion in 2050. If we over consume without the sustainable thinking we will need the equivalent of three planets to sustain the current life style. SDG 12 describes about the Responsible consumption and production and it tries to make solutions for these problems by implementing several targets.
Sustainable consumption and production can be simply state as; doing more and better with less. It also contributes to poverty alleviation, transition towards low carbon and green economies. One of the targets of SDG 12 (SDG12.6) states that, encourage companies especially large and transitional companies to adopt sustainable practices and to integrate sustainability information into their reporting cycle. Because companies are the major resource consumers for the manufacturing purposes. Cleaner production is the best practical approach in achieving sustainability. It is the continuous application of an integrated preventive environmental strategy to processes, product and services to increase efficiency and reduce risks to humans and environment.
It energizes economical improvement by permitting businesses and benefit suppliers to create more with less. Companies are as often as possible astounded at the taken a toll diminishment achievable through the appropriation of cleaner generation procedures. Besides it can decrease working fetched, progress productivity and laborer security and diminish the natural impacts due to the trade. For cleaner production to succeed in a company; senior management support, staff awareness and participation and staff input is required. The three main tools of the CP are source reduction, recycling and product modification. Source reduction facilitates sustainable development by good housekeeping and process change with raw material change, better process control, equipment modification and technology change.
The main concepts which encourages the companies to adopt CP practices are: input substitutions, good housekeeping practices, better process control, equipment modification and technology change, product modification, onsite recovery or reuse etc. During the input substitutions, input materials substitute wherever possible with less toxic materials/ renewable materials or materials with longer life time. Good housekeeping practices include take proper operational actions to prevent leaks, spills of water , chemical materials and other utilities and also formulate and enforce to practice appropriate operational instructions. Better process control stands for modify operational procedures. Equipment instructions targeting lower wastes and emission generation rates. Equipment modification and technology change helps in pollution prevention, time management and reduce expenses. During product modifications, it modifies the product characteristics in order to minimize the environmental impacts of the product over the life cycle. The best is the eco design. Onsite recovery or reuse of the wasted material in the same process.
