Water footprint assessment for sustainable reporting of organizational and industrial practices.

The amount of water needed to generate each of the goods and services we use is measured by the water footprint. It can be calculated for a particular operation, such as rice farming, a product, such as a pair of pants, or the fuel we put in our cars, or for an entire multinational corporation.

The total amount of water utilized by an industry throughout its supply chain, as well as the amount of water polluted by its effluents, is referred to as its water footprint.

However, the notion of water footprint is still relatively new, and most industries lack a standardized approach for conducting water footprint analyses.Current practices in water footprint assessments were assessed, with a focus on the garment manufacturing business, with the goal of identifying important enablers and hurdles to water footprint assessment, as well as measures to overcome the identified barriers.

Due to the need for a thorough analysis, a case study technique was adopted in this study. Three garment manufacturing facilities in Sri Lanka were investigated through semi-structured interviews with industry practitioners who had participated in the water footprint assessment process at each facility.
